Italy 2011

Elizabeth's gift to me for my 50th birthday was a "trip" to be determined later. Much later, around Elizbeth's birthday, we determined we would go hiking in Southern Italy, so it ended up as kind of a mutual present, which we both enjoyed very much.

The final leg of our trip was a 3–hour drive to Viggianello in a car we rented from the airport. Unfortunately, we missed a critical turn–off due to poor directions we’d printed from Google, and spent the better part of an hour driving around completely lost through hills and tiny villages. Eventually, we came upon a late–night (1am) party where we found a helpful crowd of people who were happy to offer their opinions.

More and more people came out from the party, and we received more and more opinions. Leaving the party, we spent the next 15 minutes determining that none of them really knew the way, so we ended up getting good directions from a helpful gas station attendant and eventually made it to our hotel, completely exhausted.

It was often unclear who, if anyone, had interest in these structures. There was obvious bracing and so on to keep buildings from collapsing, but whether it was part of an ongoing restoration or remediation for public safety, we couldn’t tell.

We stopped for lunch and a tour of the similar–sounding but very different city of Matera. We came across a crowd of middle–schoolers exiting a restaurant and poked our head in to find the aftermath of a large feast. It looked like it started well, so they cleared a small table for us and we had a lovely meal there.
